Warrick DAR will sponsor essay and art contests

The Captain Jacob Warrick Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in conjunction with the National Society DAR are sponsoring three contests for local children.

"Patriots in Pinafores-America's Amazing Women" is a Junior American Citizens Committee contest open to all preschool through 12th grade students in public, private and parochial schools and in sanctioned home study programs, including those students who may be physically or mentally challenged or in gifted/talented programs. This contest is conducted without regard to gender, race, color, religion or national origin. Preschool and kindergarten students may compete in the banner or group community service projects only.

Categories include designing a poster, stamp, banner or photographic essay or writing a poem or short story incorporating the theme.

Guidelines are as follows:

Poster: Design a poster using the theme. Original art work only. Minimum size: 8 1/2 x 11. Maximum size 22 x 28. Poster may be laminated or placed in a protective sleeve. Posters may be folded or rolled for mailing.

Stamp: Design a postal stamp using the theme. Exact size: 5 x 7 drawn in the center of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of white paper.




Banner: Working in groups of at least three, design a banner. Size: Use a 1:3 ratio, to a maximum size of 16 x 48. Banner may be paper or fabric.

Photographic essay: The student will submit not more than 25 color photographs illustrating the theme. The photos should be mounted with glue stick on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and bound in a three-brad composition folder. Brief captions may appear on each page. The first page of the folder should be a title page that includes the student's name, address and the title of the essay.

Poem: Write an original poem, any style, of 300 words or less. Entries should be on 8 1/2 x 11 paper, either ruled or plain.

Short Story: Write an original short story of 500 words or less. Entries should be on 8 1/2 x 11 paper, either ruled or plain.

Community Service: Entries should consist of not more than 15 color photographs with a descriptive text of 500 words or less. Identify all photos with captions.

Each entry must have a legibly printed, fully completed contest registration form securely attached to the reverse side of the entry. The entry deadline is Dec. 1. Information about this contest and contest registration forms are being distributed to local grade schools and are also available at the Boonville-Warrick County Public Library.

The American History essay contest is open to all students in grades five through eight. Students in grade five should submit an essay of 300-600 words. All other grades should submit an essay of 600-1,000 words.

The topic of the essay is "Along the Trail with Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery, May 1804- September 1806." Take on the role of Sacagawea, her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, their son, Jean Baptiste "Pomp" Charbonneau, York (Clark's manservant), Seaman the dog, or one of the members of the Corps of Discovery other than Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, and imagine the things that you would have seen and experienced while on the expedition. Discuss three of your most memorable experiences along the journey.

The essay is to be handwritten in ink, typed or prepared on a computer or word processor using black type in a non-script font no smaller than 12 point or larger than 14 point. A limited vision student may use Braille, a tape recorder or very large type. The essay must include a title page and a bibliography listing all references utilized.

The deadline for this contest is Nov. 22. Judging will be based on historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness.

From all entries submitted, the Captain Jacob Warrick Chapter will select one essay from each grade level and forward it on to state competition. Local winners will receive a certificate and bronze medal.

On the state level, one essay from each grade level will be forwarded to divisional competition. From the divisional competition essays will be forwarded to the national level. Those winning on the national level will receive a certificate, gold pin and monetary award.

The Christopher Columbus essay contest is for students in grades nine through 12. The topic is "Christopher Columbus-Imperfect Hero." The length of the essay is to be no more than 750 words. The essay must be typed or prepared on a computer or word processor. The essay must include a title page and must include a bibliography listing all references utilized.

The deadline for this contest is also Nov. 22.

All entries must be submitted to the Captain Jacob Warrick Chapter, DAR.
