Sports park finally deeded to Chandler

The town of Chandler's fight to regain ownership of the Chandler Sports Park has finally reached an end. The park was deeded back to the town in a 4-1 vote by the Warrick County Parks Board on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Chandler had to establish a master plan of how the park would be used in the future, as well as agreeing that the deed would revert back to the county if the park ceased to be utilized as a park for all of the county's citizens.

The reversionary clause expires on Dec. 31, 2030.

"This has been a long and drawn out process," said Gerald Lewis, president of the Parks Board.

Similar actions were made for the town of Tennyson in the past.

"We thank you all for your action," said Anthony Long, attorney for the town of Chandler. "We hope this will be a very positive move for all of us."

Chandler has been working to get the park deeded back to them for months.

"I'm thrilled to death that there was an air of cooperation between (the town of Chandler and the Parks Board)," said Brian Lucas, president of the Chandler Town Council.

He explained that all of this was due to the actions and persistence of the Chandler Parks Board and its volunteers.

"They have done an exceptionally good job," said Lucas. "They really made the difference. I'm really happy for the town. I'm glad that they have the park back and I know it will mean a lot for the kids in the town."

Dick Lautner, president of the Chandler Parks Board, said he is happy that the citizens of Chandler can now have full control over how the park is operated.

"Everything that we did at the park, (the county parks board) wanted us to report to them," said Lautner. "You just can't keep a ball diamond going like that. This way we can handle it the way we want to."

He added that he doesn't think the county parks board would have deeded the park back to the Chandler had the town not been so persistent.

"Well, it's Chandler Park and it's in Chandler," said Lautner. "I think it should be run by Chandler. We had no financial assistance from the county in 10 years. Why should they dictate to us what we should do?"

As far as improvements go, Lautner said that a major focus is going towards getting more Chandler-area kids to play baseball at the park, instead of children traveling to Newburgh to play.
