Farm Bureau supporting biodiesel project

By Jami Maday - Register Staff Writer

Chris Bunting, Wabash County Farm Bureau manager, is working to show support of a proposed biodiesel manufacturing facility in Wabash County.

In a report to the Wabash County Chamber of Commerce during its meeting Thursday, Bunting said Wabash County Farm Bureau sent letter of support in March to area entities related to such a project, such as the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Letters were also sent to area politicians like State Reps. David Reis (R-108) and Roger Eddy (R-109), and State Sen. John O. Jones (R, Mt. Vernon-54) to voice positive aspects of employment and industry if such a plant were to be established in the county.

"We could use all the help we can get," Bunting told the Register on Thursday. "That would be such a huge benefit."

Mid America Biodiesel, LLC, is continuing a feasibility study on construction of a biodiesel manufacturing facility in the county.

On March 23, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced that $90,000 in grant funding had been awarded from the Illinois Department of Agriculture's AgriFIRST program for the feasibility study of a plant that could process around 27 million bushels of soybeans per year.

Aside from the biodiesel discussion, Bunting's report also included Wabash County Farm Bureau's efforts to improve agriculture education in schools.

In cooperation with Edwards, Lawrence and Wayne County Farm Bureaus, there will be a Summer Ag Institute for elementary school teachers from June 14-17. The first day of the Institute will be held at Wabash Valley College, with the next three days in Lawrence County (June 15), Wayne County (June 16) and Edwards County (June 17).

Although the event is for pre-registered participants, there are openings available, said Bunting. Teachers who would still like to sign up for the $25 class can call Bunting at 262-5865.

The class is targeted for 4th and 5th-grade teachers, but teachers in all elementary school grades are welcome to register.
