We currently have 43 girls out for the team this year, led by a small group of seniors.
Chelsea Gidcumb is out top 1,600-meter runner and Erin Deisher will help out in both the 1,600 and middle distance events. Debbie Schell returns as our top shot and discus thrower with newcomer Marissa Seibert helping out in those events. Another newcomer is Alisha Reed, who will run the sprints.
We also have a very competitive group of juniors with Jasmine Jacobs leading the way there. She returns as our top hurdler after having qualified for the State in the 300-meter low hurdles last year. She will be tough to beat. Lauren Bobbitt will be one of the top sprinters in Southern Illinois, and Jessica Schurman will be another; Schurman will be tough to beat in the 400-meter event.
Those three will also team together in the relay events.
Tessa Spencer has put in a lot of extra time and will be tough to beat in the 800-meter run. She will also triple jump. Lindsey Bobbitt has been working hard and returns as our top long jumper; she will also help in the sprints. Chrissy Henry is going to try the pole vault, and will help in both the hurdles and 400-meter race. Amanda Seaton is another 400-meter runner and is working hard at adding the triple jump.
Katie Bader has turned in some good times in the sprints, and will help in the relay races. Jessica Kruse is working on the high hurdles this year. Taylor Gaines is concentrating on the high jump. Jordan Woodcock and Lauren Zimmer are working on the sprints. Emily Tinsley and newcomer Kira Hillyard will compete in the distance events. Jessica Thread and newcomer Mandi Dorworth will be competing in the weights.
Thessa Speth, one of seven sophomores, returns as one of our top sprinters and a member of the sprint relays. Rachel David returns as our top 3,200-meter runner. Newcomer Kendra Saxe has worked hard and is one of the top 800-meter contenders. Erica Bramlet will also help in the 800-meter race. Audra Hipsher will concentrate on the pole vault while newcomers Emily Williams and Megan Willingham are doing well in the weights.
We also have 15 freshmen out. Ellen Watson is working hard in the hurdles and jumping events, and her twin sister, Tess, is one of our top 3,200-meter runners. Mackenzie Woodcock will help in the sprints while Sara Stoltz is working on the middle distance and jumping events. Whitney Rhinehart and Blair Wood will run the middle distance and distance races. Jessica Wallace is working out in the weights. We have a large group of freshmen working out in the sprints. The group includes Tori Frailey, Shyla Kingsbury, Whitney Hull, Brittany Baxley, Mallory Strong, Sami Hightshoe, Shaintaile Perry and Heather Keil.
Assistant Coach Karin Kelsey and I are very proud of the work these young ladies have put in. We also are very excited about adding a pole vault pit to our facility, and being able to compete in that event this year. We feel that many individuals and relay participants are capable of qualifying for the Illinois High School Class A State Track Meet again this year if they continue to work hard.
