Eddie Garrett named Most Valuable Wrestler, and 30-win Club member
By BOB LIVINGSTON - Register Sports Editor
It was a relaxed scene at the Mt. Carmel High School Wrestling Awards dinner Sunday in the school’s cafeteria.
It was the final gathering for the group with Coach Pat Cheesman. Cheesman has been elevated to the MCHS Principal’s position for the next school year, and will not be coaching wrestling again. But the coach did acknowledge he enjoyed coaching the sport, that it is “my life’s blood.”
Cheesman ends his career with a 355-203 record.
He also noted the tremendous amount of time committed to the sports, and how tough it can be on families.
His remarks concluded the ceremony during which senior Eddie Garrett was named as the team’s Most Valuable Wrestler. Cheesman said Garrett, who finished the season with 38 wins and advanced to the Illinois High School Association’s Class A State Tournament, was picked by a vote of the team.
Also picked by a vote of the team were Dakota Hannah, a freshman, as the Most Promising, and Taylor Wolfe, a junior, as the Most Improved.
Garrett also received recognition for membership in the 30-win Club while Wolfe and Hannah, along with Dustin Leek and Ralph Malone, were recognized for membership in the 20-win Club.
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
Coach Cheesman also passed out several individual awards, including some he called “fun awards.”
The Six Pound Orange Award went to Malone while Justin Gillihan claimed the Quiz the Coach Award. The MASH Award went to Wolfe.
In statistical honors, Malone had the Most Pins with 14 while Garrett had the Most Takedowns with 153. Of those, Cheesman said Garrett had 35 first takedowns.
Dustin Stokes had the Most Reversals and Leek the Most Escapes.
Coach Cheesman said the team had 15 participants this season, and that there are 14 weight classes in high school wrestling. He mentioned, however, MCHS had to forfeit some weight classes because some wrestlers did not make weight. Cheesman also said sometimes he had to move a wrestler up a class or two to fill out the roster.
The team posted an 11-15 dual meet record this season, but he said sending as many wrestlers as the team did - seven - out of the Regional onto the Sectional was “a great accomplishment.”
The coach, assisted by Assistant Coach Mike Leek, awarded letters (pins to previous letter winners) to wrestlerettes Jessica Wallace, Molly Henson, Emily Wood and Nancy Wallace, as well as Hannah, Chase Savage, Dustin Leek, Daniel Cheesman, Stephen Dickey, Malone, Stokes, Wolfe, and Garrett.
FURTHER REMARKS
Cheesman, who is the MCHS Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, expressed his appreciation to Principal Clyde Leonard, who assisted with many of Cheesman’s normal after-school duties while he was coaching the wrestlers. He also expressed appreciation to Assistant Athletic Directors Sheila Odom and Doug Spear, and Administrative Assistant Karin Kelsey.
Further appreciation went to Todd Gill, of the Mt. Carmel Chiropractic Clinic, and Dr. Julko Fullop for their assistance in treating injuries, to Mike Leek, his assistant coach, his sons, Michael and Andrew, for their assistance in coaching the team, and his daughter Krista Peach, for making the team’s scrapbooks.
