Mid-America Biodiesel Mt. Carmel, LLC continuing efforts to construct plant
Posted: Thursday, Jun 14, 2007 - 03:08:16 pm EDT
Mid America Biodiesel, LLC (MAB) is continuing its efforts to construct a biodiesel production plant in the Mt. Carmel area. MAB has recently formed the company that will own and operate the plant, MMCAB Mt. Carmel Biodiesel, LLC.
Mt. Carmel will be the corporate headquarters for MAB which is planning two plants in addition to the Mt. Carmel facility, according to company president Claude Wilson. The next two facilities are being planned for locations along the Ohio and Mississippi river systems.
Currently, there are only four operating biodiesel plants in the state of Illinois. In comparison, Iowa has 10 plants in operation, and Texas has 17.
MAB has selected Greenline Technologies to supply the technology and equipment required for the production of biodiesel.
“Greenlines’ technology is advantageous in that it can process over 20 different types of vegetable oils and/or animal fats and it does not use any water in the production process,” Wilson said.
For the biodiesel production process, this waterless technology is a great benefit to the State of Illinois which is currently experiencing declining aquifer levels in many parts of the state, MAB indicated.
“Many people confuse biodiesel with ethanol,” Wilson said. “Biodiesel is a renewable replacement for #2 diesel fuel which is primarily used in over the road trucks, trains, agriculture and heavy equipment.”
“Using alternative fuel reduces the world’s dependency on fossil fuels. Using biodiesel takes that commitment one-step higher. Unlike hydrogen fuel, or burning pure vegetable oil, biodiesel can be produced and used immediately without making any changes in our current automotive technology or fuel distribution networks. Implementation is totally seamless,” he added.
Biodiesel can be used 100 percent or splash-blended on the fly in any ratio for a totally reliable, viable, safe and immediate alternative to petroleum fuel.
APPROVED FOR ALL DIESEL ENGINES
Biodiesel fuel is approved by every manufacturer of diesel engines on the market today. Jeep and other manufacturers are now delivering new vehicles filled with biodiesel. Biodiesel is derived from plant material and other recyclable byproduct sources, which makes it an extremely environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to petro-diesel.
Using biodiesel reduces many pollutants by half that of petroleum diesel, and cuts global warming carbon dioxide contributions by up to 78 percent, the MAB spokesman said. Biodiesel is totally biodegradable, and will not harm fish or animals.
“Biodiesel burns cleanly and is more energy-efficient than fossil fuels, which makes it an attractive alternative for businesses looking to economize, both financially and in their global energy impact,” he said. “Biodiesel has the potential to provide the foundation for large-scale economic benefits to the agricultural engine that make America strong and clean.”
Typically, biodiesel is sold as a five percent blend with #2 diesel fuel. Soybean oil is the primary feedstock used in the production of biodiesel, though any vegetable oil such as corn, canola, sunflower and other sources, can be used.
The production of biodiesel is a chemical process that requires little energy to produce the final product.
Ethanol is the renewable replacement for gasoline which is almost exclusively used in cars and light trucks. Ethanol must be mixed with gasoline at not more than a 10 percent level or extensive modifications to the gasoline engine must be made.
In the U.S., corn is the primary feedstock and the production of ethanol involves a complex biological fermentation process that many experts argue requires more energy to produce than the energy achieved in the final product.
MAB is committed to using Illinois and local resources. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of biodiesel and where to get it, feel free to contact Claude Wilson, President, Mid America Biodiesel, LLC. at 618-308-0047.
