Student hit after exiting bus

An 8-year-old girl was struck by a passing vehicle as she exited a Warrick County School Corporation bus on Monday afternoon. Kasey Groves, a third-grade student at John H. Castle Elementary School, was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville with leg injuries.
Groves was listed in stable condition, and her injures were not life-threatening.
According to Lt. Paul Weinzapfel of the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office, a white Buick sedan driven by Marlene Helms of Boonville failed to stop for the school bus at the intersection of Highway 261 and Jenner Road.
“The bus was southbound on 261 and had stopped at Jenner Road to let the child off,” said Weinzapfel. “The child crossed in front of the bus to go to the east side of the road. The car driven by Helms was northbound, and the bus driver realized that it was not going to stop and he started honking his horn trying to get the attention of the driver.”
Witnesses on the scene stated that the stop arm and flashing lights on the school bus were working properly.
“Drivers really need to pay attention to those stop arms,” he said. “This is what can happen if you don’t stop.”
Groves’ mother, Krista Groves, runs a day care at her home at the corner of Indiana 261 and Jenner Road. She had previously complained about drivers in that location speeding past stopped school busses.
