Wabash County Animal Shelter Buddies (WCASB) continued its organization efforts in a meeting Tuesday evening at Hope Lutheran Church in Mt. Carmel.
The WCASB volunteer group was inspired by Paula and Tom Garrett after they visited the Wabash County Animal Shelter to look for a dog to adopt last March.
Paula and Tom were concerned about the conditions of the animal shelter, they said, so decided to help the shelter by cleaning cages and making repairs.
“One person can’t do it,” Paula said, alluding to Wabash County Animal Control Warden Chuck Skidmore, who has the responsibility of caring for the dogs in addition to setting traps for coons and other troublesome animals, and countless other animal control tasks for the county.
“We want to improve the shelter, upgrade the facility and help the animals,” said Paula. She noted, however, that “we work with the animal shelter; we are guests.”
There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available, explained group members. Paula and Tom are currently looking for a volunteer dog kennel cleaner, explaining that by doing so, “you really get to know the animals up close and personal.” Paula added that the kennel cleaning needs to be done daily.
The shelter also needs thorough cleaning, she said, and dog walkers are desperately needed.
Several improvements are also necessary, according to WCASB. A leaky roof needs repaired and fencing in the kennels need fixed, the group learned. The freezer also needs replacement, the spokesperson added.
If an animal needs to be surrendered, make sure to call the shelter beforehand at 262-7109, Paula and Tom stressed.
Through the month of August, the Animal Shelter Buddies is conducting a “Scrap Metal” fundraiser. Drop off scrap metal in the designated area in the parking lot behind Sharp & Williams to help improve the animal shelter.
This is “a great way to get rid of those old metal lawn chairs you didn’t know what to do with and help animals at the same time,” said Sherri Spruell, member of the WCASB.
Donations are also being accepted. They can be made to WCASB and mailed to Wabash County Treasurer, P.O. Box 428, Mt. Carmel, IL 62863.
