Memorial playground planned

It was something that everyone involved hopes they never have to witness again.

While riding her bicycle, 6-year-old Brooklynn Wilhite was struck and killed by a garbage truck in Pueblo Trailer Park in Chandler on Tuesday, July 8.

As a means to memorialize her, some Pueblo residents have gathered together to build a playground in her honor.

Amanda Martinez and her mother came up with the idea to build a playground area for the kids in the neighborhood after the incident occurred.

“There’s no safe place in the neighborhood for kids to play,” she said.

Due to liability issues, residents of the park are not permitted to have playgrounds on their lots.

“If we had a park down here for kids to play on, the chances of (a child being hit in the road) again are slim,” said Martinez. “It’s quiet here. You hear about this stuff in Evansville, not here.”

Martinez and others have worked with the company who owns the moblie home park, as well as the property manager, and she said they have been very supportive of granting a 1,400 square-foot area for the playground.

The area is planned to have a large playground, a half-sized basketball court and picnic tables for people to use. A plaque will also be displayed to honor Brooklynn.

Martinez said there are roughly 15 kids in the neighborhood and that they are all very excited about the prospect of having a playground near their homes.

The playground is being paid for through donations and Martinez said she hopes to have it completed in the fall. Anyone wanting to donate money or equipment to Brooklynn’s Playground may do so at any Integra Bank branch.

“We are trying to give our children in the neighborhood a safe place to play, since there is no play area right now,” Martinez said.
