A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the home of the Ryan Bertram family, at 31 1/2 Lambert Drive, Monday evening.

A spokesman for the Mt. Carmel Fire Department said the call came in at 5:51 p.m. Monday. Smoke from the blaze could be seen from 9th and Oak streets, where fire units from Allendale Fire Department made the turn toward the fire scene on the west edge of Mt. Carmel.

When firefighters responded to the scene, flames were going through the roof, Mt. Carmel Fire Chief Alan Kidd said Monday. He said firefighters had to knock down the intense blaze before they could enter the structure to continue work of extinguishing the fire.

A problem encountered was that the Mt. Carmel ladder truck was not able to reach the modular home, which sits over the crest of a ridge in the area known as Oressa Heights.

Kidd said there was no road to the site. Water had to be pumped by the ladder truck through a large hose down the lenghty lane way to the fire scene, he explained.

Kidd said the call for mutual aid brought units from Bellmont, Allendale and Keensburg, as well as from Princeton and Owensville in Indiana. The fire department spokesman estimated 29 firefighters from the various units responded to the request, in addition to the 21 from Mt. Carmel.

Kidd said the firefighters were rotated in and out of fighting the blaze in the burning residence due to the extreme heat and smoke at the scene. Units of the Wabash General Hospital Ambulance Service were on location to examine the firefighters to make sure they were OK.

The chief said the fire apparently started in the center of the house and spread from there. He added he did not know the structure was at its location, and that it had been there for approximately 12 years.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Kidd said both parents were at their places of employment, and the children had been taken to a grandparent’s home while the parents were working.
