City getting into the spirit with a community tree

The City of Mt. Carmel is hoping to start a new Christmas tradition this year — a Community Christmas Tree.

City Street Superintendent Dave Easter and city employee Bob Mayhue have had the idea for several years, said Easter, but things finally came together in time to make it happen this year. The two, with the help of numerous volunteers, plan to take one of the 19-foot trees that once hung over an intersection on Market Street, and place it at Veterans Park, 3rd and Market streets, in uptown Mt. Carmel.

Mt. Carmel Mayor Tom Meeks has praised Easter and Mayhue for coming up with the idea of this Community Christmas Tree, and says he thinks it will be a success.

“It’s great to have people in our community like Dave and Bob who are willing to donate their time and energy to help our young people enjoy the holiday season,” said Meeks.

Dave Partee and Steve Partee are building a stand for the tree, said Easter, and Rod and Debbie Rodriguez, who bought the tree last year after it was replaced with a new one, have volunteered to loan it to the city for the Community Christmas Tree project.

“I think having a Community Christmas Tree is a great idea for Mt. Carmel,” said Rod. “It’s a great way to bring people in our community together.”

Easter and Mayhue have also gotten Wabash Area Vocational Enterprises (WAVE) clients, Oakview Heights residents and area school children involved in the new project.

“Kieffer Lumber has donated wood material for 4-inch round ornament cut-outs, and Oakview and WAVE are going to paint a primer coat on the ornaments,” said Easter. “Then we will distribute the ornaments to students in Kindergarten through third grade at South School and at St. Mary’s School.”

The kids will have an opportunity to decorate the ornaments however they want, added Easter, and then, if they want, they can bring the ornaments to Veterans Park following the Dec. 6 Christmas Parade.

Volunteers will place the students’ ornaments on the Community Christmas Tree at that time.

“This is just something we want to do for the community,” said Easter. “We want to get the kids involved.”

Easter added that if the response from the community is good this year, then the city may make Mt. Carmel’s Community Christmas Tree an annual event.
