It’s not often that cattle get a chance to aid in local law enforcement, but that’s exactly what led to the location of a methamphetamine lab last week.
At approximately 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, Warrick County Sergeant Todd Neff was patrolling in the area of Lincoln Trail Road and Hendrickson Road — just west of Tennyson — when he encountered cattle in the roadway.
As he approached the residence, located at 5066 Lincoln Trail Road, to inform the owners that their cattle were in the road, he detected the strong odor of anhydrous ammonia, a critical ingredient in the manufacture of methamphetamine.
Neff also observed “methamphetamine lab trash” under the carport, according to the police report.
Additional deputies secured the area and a search warrant was issued, resulting in the discovery of an active clandestine methamphetamine lab located in the residence, along with a large tank of anhydrous ammonia.
Resident David E. Stutsman, 45, was taken into custody, along with his girlfriend, Michelle R. Luster, 35, of Evansville.
Stutsman was charged with manufacturing a schedule II narcotic, possession of a schedule II narcotic, possession of anhydrous ammonia in an unapproved container, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and maintaining a common nuisance.
He was held at the Warrick County Jail on $1,000 cash bond.
Along with the previously stated charges, Luster was also charged with visiting a common nuisance. She was also held at the Warrick County Jail on $1,000 cash bond.
“The Warrick County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the vigilant pursuit of illegal drug manufacturers that are operating within our county and surrounding counties in an attempt to eliminate this illegal activity and rid our community of this problem,” said Chief Deputy Brett Kruse.
