Solid waste board toils through decisions

One of the biggest hurdles facing the Warrick County Solid Waste Management District after it parted ways with the county was to devise new salary and personnel ordinances for those county employees absorbed by the district, including health insurance issues.
Currently, Warrick County employees pay — monthly — $45.48 for a single employee, $77.56 for an employee and child, $87.20 for an employee and spouse, and $129.24 for the family package.
Several years ago, county employees only needed to pay $1 for health insurance, but budget constraints forced the county to adopt a different policy.
“(Boonville) also had that policy of $1 per month,” said Boonville Mayor Pam Hendrickson, who is a member of the Solid Waste Management Board. “Economically, as well as the cost of insurance, things have changed and we were forced to go into paid partial.”
Just like county employees, those working for the solid waste management district also pay the above mentioned health insurance costs, a measure that was unanimously approved by the board for the upcoming year at Monday’s meeting.
However, the executive director has been paying only the $1 premium. The board decided to change the executive director’s premium to be in line with the rest of the employees.
In keeping in line with Warrick County’s salary ordinance, the solid waste management board opted to grant full-time employees, including the executive director and the controller, a $1,000 raise for next year.
The board also approved two-year contracts for the executive director, controller and director of operations with a close 4-3 vote. Those who voted against the contracts — Hendrickson, Bob Barnett and Phil Baxter — argued that the board should wait until the start of new year, since changes in personnel on the county and board level will likely change.
