A Chandler woman was killed when she lost control of her vehicle, police believe, after hitting a patch of ice on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
Warrick County Sheriff Marvin Heilman said the woman — 49-year-old Robin Nunley — was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
“I spoke with the victim’s husband... and he was surprised that she was not restrained,” said Heilman. “This is far too common of a mistake, bad habit or whatever you want to call it, but countless numbers of people are critically injured and killed because they did not buckle up before traveling.”
At approximately 7:45 p.m., a call from a passerby came into central dispatch regarding a one-vehicle crash on Stevenson Station Road, just south of Heim Road.
According to police reports, Nunley was heading southbound on Stevenson Station Road when she crossed an ice-covered bridge, which they believe caused her to slide off the east side of the road. The vehicle came to a stop after striking a tree, causing Nunley to be partially pinned out of the passenger side of the vehicle.
She died at the scene.
“We have experienced a large number of fatal crashes in the county this year,” said Heilman. “It is our opinion that this victim would have survived the crash by wearing her seatbelt.”
