Mt. Carmel engineer Dave Dallas examined one of the pin placements put into Market Street in 1891 by F. M. Polk of Princeton, Ind., who was employed by the city the resurvey the city's streets.

The pins, at several intersections along Market Street, were uncovered when workers stripped the asphalt from the street in preparation for the repaving project now underway.

According to county records, uncovered by Dallas, the city hired F. M. Polk of Princeton in 1891 to resurvey the city's streets. His report, submitted in August of that year, indicated he planted the markers at the center of intersections of Third, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth streets with Market Street.

Dallas said he intends to mark the pins' locations after the paving is completed.
