PRINCETON-Two half-brothers were arrested early Friday morning at a rural Oakland City home, where police say the suspects were running a meth lab in the basement.

George Edward Brown, 40, and his half brother John Thomas Johnstone, 36, both of Oakland City, face several drug-related felony charges, with Brown also charged with neglect of a dependent. Police say Brown put his family - including three small children - at risk by operating a meth lab in the basement, while they lived in the house above.

According to an affidavit for probable cause, police received a call at about 12:30 a.m. Friday informing them that Brown was spotted driving a van toward Oakland City.

After running a radio check, police confirmed Brown had a suspended driver's license.

Francisco Town Marshal Vance Lloyd and Oakland City Police Officer Michael Collins found the van parked in the driveway of Brown's CR 100 home. While speaking to Brown and Johnstone the officers noticed coffee filters - some containing white powder that later tested positive for meth - on the ground and on the bumper of a trailer belonging to Johnstone, according to police.

Investigating further, officers found what they described as a working meth lab in the basement of Brown's home, located just under the living area where his wife and children were found sleeping. Containers of anhydrous ammonia were also found under the front porch, in the back yard and in a nearby cornfield.

Police obtained permission to enter Johnstone's trailer where they found a clear, plastic baggy containing a white powder which field tested positive for meth, as well as a small amount of marijuana, and several handguns and rifles, according to an affidavit for probable cause.

Police also found a plastic bottle with a plastic tube connected to it, lithium strips, anhydrous ammonia, and other materials commonly used to make of meth, according to an affidavit.

Brown and Johnstone were each charged with manufacturing meth; possession of meth; possession of meth precursors; and illegal possession and storage of anhydrous ammonia. Brown is also facing the neglect count and Johnstone was additionally charged with possession and manufacturing meth while in possession of a firearm.

Johnstone's camper and the weapons were seized by police.

The Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab Team cleaned up the lab and the Pike County Sheriff's Dept. also assisted on the scene.

Both suspects are being held at the Gibson County Jail on a $7,500 cash bond.
