Thursday sports highlights

Gibson Southern baseball men took advantage of seven hits, nine walks and four Princeton Community errors, and thus overcame eight errors of their own to beat the Tigers 8-5 Thursday night on Gil Hodges Field. Senior lefthander Jesse Reed pitched 5 1/3 innings to gain the win. Junior lefthander Sam DeLong relieved Reed in Princeton’s three-run fifth, and junior Logan Elpers moved from third base to the mound with two runners on base and two out in the seventh and proceeded to get a game-ending strikeout.

It’s understandable if Princeton Community boys’ tack coach Bill Niederhaus thinks this is an incomplete report of his team’s championhip in Wednesday night’s Princeton Invitational.

Princeton Community track boys stayed unbeaten for the season Wednesday night by winning their own invitational meet with 135 1/2 points to 112 for 2014 champion Jasper and 78 for 2014 runnerup Mount Vernon. Wood Memorial with 4 points finished last in the 11-team meet. . . . Princeton’s Desi Walker, Seth Pfeil, Nate Niederhaus and Philip Dzienciol won the 3,200-meter relay in a school-record 8 minutes 8.50 seconds, and Joe Wildt joined Walker, Dzienciol and Pfeil in winning the closing 1,600-meter relay in 3:30.69. . . . In between, Pfeil won the 400-meter dash, freshman Justin Niederhaus the 1,600, freshman Lee Friedman the 3,200, and sophomore JaVon Wilkerson the long jump with a 20-foot-11 leap. . . . Wood Memorial’s best individual events finish came from senior basketball standout Conner Sevier, who in his first high school track meet placed fifth in the shot put. . . . Sevier will sign Wabash Valley College basketball scholarship papers at 8 a.m. Friday in the Wood Memorial High School library. . . .

OCU will host baseball regional

Princeton Community grad Alec Sandefer and Oakland City University baseball teammates should feel secure when, with Sandefer pitching, they play Division I University of Evansville at 6 p.m. Wednesday in UE’s Braun Stadium.
