CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Division I Austin Peay State's 95-75 Thursday night exhibition basketball win over Oakland City University was closer than it appears.

'We were down 78-67 with 4 minutes 38 seconds left and had the ball, but we missed a shot and they scored," Mighty Oaks coach Mike Sandifar said.

"We got back within 82-71 with 3;44 left, but again missed a shot."

Still, the final score represents a 16-point improvement since Dec. 29, when Austin Peay State won a regular-season game 97-61.

The Governors, Ohio Valley Conference runnersup in both regular-season and postseason tournament last season, led 52-36 at halftime.

"We got closer the second half because we committed just 6 turnovers, after 13 the first half," Sandifar said.

"Officials called us for several moving screens, two on Brandon Hopf the first half and another in the second. We had to take him out with nine minutes left in the first half and, altogether, we probably played 10 or 11 minutes without him.

"Brandon ended up fouling out with about two minutes left."

Junior guard Jared Mangers, transfer from Wabash Valley College,, led the Mighty oaks with 20 points, though shooting just 7-of-17.

Six-foot-six senior forward Nate Schumacher parlayed 15 points, a game-high 16 rebounds and 6 assists, the latter figure tying sophomore guard Josh Maggard for the game-high. Maggard, a transfer from Division I Gardner-Webb, scored 15 points.

"Nate did it as he usually does, with hard work," Sandifar said.

Hopf, who as a junior averaged 22.4 points, Thursday settled for six shots and eight points in 26 minutes.

Hunter Elliott, junior from Pike Central, hit a pair of three-point goals, though the Mighty Oaks shot just 7-of-25 beyond the arc. Austin Peay State won with 1-of-10 three-point shooting, but committed just 10 turnovers and, altogether, shot 33-of-68 (48.5 percent) afield. OCU shot 26-of-67 (38.8 percent).

Six-eight sophomore center John Fraley led the winners with 21 points and took 10 rebounds. Anthony Campbell scored 20 points, veteran guard Wes Channels 15.

Forward Marcel Williams parlayed 13 points and 13 rebounds. Sub Tyrone Caldwell with 11 points became a fifth Governor in double-figures.

Having split two exhibitions, including Saturday's 94-74 win over Fontbonne, the Mighty Oaks now prepare for their Nov. 14 regular season opener at Division I Evansville in Roberts Stadium.
