FARGO, ND - Going against the best and trying to be the best, Caleb Smith of Princeton, will take part in the Asic Cadet/Junior Wrestling Nationals, on July 20 through the 26th in Fargo, North Dakota as part of Team Indiana.

Smith will wrestle in the 119-pound weight class and participate in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions of the national tournament.

Smith qualified for the Nationals in Fargo via a third-place finish in the Freestyle State Championships, and a fourth-place in the Greco-Roman State Championships as a member of the Princeton Wrestling Club. Both state tournaments were held in May of this year, in Indianapolis.

In the Greco-Roman state competition, Smith actually placed fourth, and was part of Team Indiana as an alternate, but was bumped up to the third spot and given the chance to take to the mats when the wrestler who finished ahead of him was unable to attend the Junior Nationals.

Of the two styles, Freestyle versus Greco-Roman, Smith admits he prefers the latter. &#8220It (Greco-Roman) involves more upper body," Smith said. &#8220I'm better at that, while in Freestyle involves more shooting (quick takedown moves) much of the time."

This is the third time that Smith will take part in the national tourney, but the his first in the Cadet/Junior Nationals level. The event is over four days, with two days of wrestling Freestyle and two days wrestling Greco-Roman. Smith could wrestle in as many as seven or eight matches over each two-day tourney with the ultimate goal of being a high school All-American.

&#8220That's my goal. That's what I'm going for. To win it all," Smith said.

Smith will be a sophomore at Princeton Community High School in 2007-08.

During the 2006-07 wrestling season, Smith was a Big 8 Conference champion at 112-pounds for the Tigers, and went on to win an IS sectional championship, a regional runner-up and qualify for semistate. He won 31 of 41 matches on the year.
