Newburgh resident Edward James Shaughnessy died Tuesday, Nov. 17 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was 93.
Edward was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on April 10, 1916 into a family of six siblings. He attended local Catholic schools and began working at an early age during the Depression to supplement family income. In the mid 1930s, he attended Oswego State Teacher's College in Oswego, N.Y., graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1937. At Oswego, he met his future wife, Emily Di Clementine. They were married in 1938 and recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.
During World War II, Mr. Shaughnessy worked as a teacher in New York City, assigned to the most difficult locations of Harlem and Brooklyn. He then continued his work in education, earning a master's degree and serving as a school principal in other New York State locations. In the mid 1950s, he joined Eastman Kodak in Rochester, N.Y. He later transferred to Tennessee Eastman Corporation in Kingsport, Tenn., as the Director of Corporate Training. Edward retired in 1981.
In the mid 1980s, Mr. and Mrs. Shaughnessy moved to northern Virginia, and in 2007, to Newburgh.
Edward is survived by his wife of 71 years, Emily D. Shaughnessy of Newburgh; a daughter, Patricia Harvey of Newburgh; two sons, Dr. Peter Shaughnessy of Denver, Colo., and Daniel Shaughnessy of Purcellville, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 21, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Newburgh, with Rev. Joseph Ziliak officiating. Entombment followed in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Mausoleum. Titzer Family Funeral Homes-Simpson Chapel in Newburgh handled the arrangements.
